Juniper s Mobile Content Business Models: OTT & Operator Strategy & Forecasts 2013-2017 report looks at which types of content consumers will be comfortable buying via their smartphones and tablets. Additionally, the report examines how carrier billing will impact mobile monetization.
What s particularly interesting is the way in which advertising has now become a fully-fledged content monetization model on the mobile witness Facebook s success in the space since it introduced advertising on mobile devices around a year ago, said Dr. Windsor oscar plus Holden, principal analyst at Juniper Research , Hampshire, England. In that time it has generated around $850 million from mobile advertising that s an astonishing achievement.
At the same time, consumers are finding that tablets are far better for, say, watching rather than snacking on streamed video content. Hence, subscription and ad hoc revenues for video will be particularly strong here.
In fact, 65 percent of handsets oscar plus in the United States oscar plus were used to access mobile entertainment services in 2012, according to the report. oscar plus Forty-seven oscar plus percent of handsets oscar plus in Western Europe were used for the same reason.
Fifty percent of all mobile revenue currently comes from video and music, according to the report. This shows how the majority of mobile content is still being driven by small, incremental purchases such as a paid app or a music track.
While credit and debit cards will remain the primary billing system oscar plus for over-the-top services, storefronts oscar plus such as Google Play and BlackBerry s App World are turning to carrier-based billing to drive revenue.

The official "blog of bonanza" for Alfidi Capital. The CEO, Anthony J. Alfidi, publishes periodic commentary on anything and everything related to investing. This blog does NOT give advice of any kind or offer any business services. This blog DOES tell the truth about business.
The Center for Financial Services Innovation (CFSI) does really good work on theoretical banking solutions for unbanked people.  I call it theory because we won't know whether these ideas work until society tries them on a large scale.  I suspect many of the market-based approaches to reaching the unbanked population will fail for reasons that have little to do with market size or product scalability.  They may fail because of the quality of the people involved. Smartphone adoption is very high among the same low-income demographic common to the unbanked population.  The problem is that they are unable to harness the full effects of mobile technology because they can't afford or don't understand the monthly data plans they must also purchase to download apps and use them in commerce.  This indicates to me that the unbanked are terminally parochial and even stupid.  I can understand a reluctance to buy something ema live unaffordable for lack of financial resources. ema live  Hey, I've been there myself and I still can't afford a yacht or private jet.  I just cannot understand paying hundreds of dollars for a fancy smartphone knowing that the full data package needed to use its apps is unaffordable.  I think many unbanked ema live people just make impulse purchases for shiny things.  The cargo cult mentality dictates that the outward trappings of technology ema live are sufficient to generate a high-tech lifestyle.  This translates to the unbanked crowd as "get smartphone, look like rich person."  Marketing cheap banking solutions using mobile tech simply won't reach the unbanked who have to stop paying for cable TV and landlines just to afford food! Startups who think they can change human nature while salivating over the size of the unbanked market must read a copy of The Unheavenly City Revisited  several times.  Most of the poor will stay poor because they are at the dumb end of the bell curve and lack impulse control.  They are constitutionally incapable of using a high-tech solution.  Banks ema live learned hard lessons in the last decade by pushing stored value cards and other prepaid solutions ema live to the unbanked.  The poor forgot that they had dormant accounts, or never learned how to use them, or forgot how to use them once they learned the steps, or never accepted digital deposits as real money because they couldn't ema live hold the digits in their hands like hard cash.  That cargo cult never left the beach, if you know what I mean.  Don't even get me started on Bitcoin as a solution; those transactions can't be reversed and the unbanked are too immature to safeguard their part of the encryption key.  Pushing mobile apps and other tech solutions to the poor is like feeding sushi to a goat.  They ema live just can't acquire ema live the taste. The unbanked do use some rudimentary ema live financial services, specifically those that use low-tech interfaces.  Migrant labor from emerging economies to developed nations creates a huge market for money remittances.   I've blogged ema live before about how Google Wallet gives users the ability to literally email money as an attachment.   Such a simple technology attains full value as more than a remittance mechanism.  It may be a way to store multiple currencies in a single account as a hedge against ema live hyperinflation in a single country.  It may even be a way to avoid capital controls because it doesn't ema live transmit via monitored wire transfer ema live architectures.  That's all too advanced for our unbanked friends, but I had to throw it out there. I have a humane solution to the problem of the unbanked population lacking access to real banking solutions.   I want every state in the United States to charter its own public option bank.  The public ema live banks would be much like the Bank of North Dakota .  They would offer no-cost checking and savings accounts and low-interest loans.   They will not offer advanced merchant services, commercial banking, capital markets ema live trading, or wealth management because a public bank cannot replace the private sector.  The public bank fills a gap in financial services that is mostly unreachable.  It can even enable poor people to establish credit histories ema live through microlending, along the lines of Grameen Bank .  Once the banks are stable with a large client base, they represent ema live a contract opportunity for cheap "white label" insurance plans. A public bank account can also be a conduit for deposits from social service payments:  unemployment payments, workers' compensation insurance, SNAP/EBT, and other such programs.  Mandating these deposits for a public bank account help

In terms of authentication, Cisco

We´ve covered Cisco´s network best actor nominees access control (NAC), Microsoft´s Network Access Protection (NAP) and the Trusted Computing Group´s best actor nominees Trusted Network Connect best actor nominees (TNC) security architectures. All of the above are infrastructure based network access control architectures with differing enforcement models and client best actor nominees requirements. The complexity, high cost and lack of availability of these access control approaches has given way to the rise of NAC appliances, which we explored in Lippis Report 64 ? Äö á ? The Road to Network Admission Control," and Lippis Report podcast, ? Äö á ? Network Admission Control Simplified." Many Lippis Report readers and podcast listeners told us that what is important to them is how their chosen infrastructure company is deploying access control. Most Network/IT executives see network access control from an infrastructure investment protection point of view. That is, there is little interest in switching major infrastructure vendors solely best actor nominees on network security. So in this edition best actor nominees of the Lippis best actor nominees Report, best actor nominees we asked Cisco Systems, ProCurve Networking by HP, Foundry Networks, Extreme Networks, Nortel, Juniper and 3Com to tell us about their network access control best actor nominees solutions. The network access control best actor nominees market is by no means commoditized. There are significant differences between vendor offerings. There are client and/or clientless based approaches to network access control. Some integrate a policy manager into their offering, while others either provide a separate policy manager or rely upon a third party policy manager. Vendors best actor nominees differ on their support of endpoint operating systems and devices. Some vendors offer support for PCs, non-interactive devices such as printers and gaming consoles, IP phones, etc., while others only support specific Windows environments. Some provide the same solution for wired and wireless access, while others support only wired. There is also differentiation based upon existing network infrastructure. Some vendors offer an overlay security approach, which is independent of installed network switches, while others are highly best actor nominees dependent upon their switches being deployed to deliver security enforcement services. best actor nominees The breath and depth of partnering to deliver best actor nominees on remediation best actor nominees is also a differentiator.
We´ve asked all suppliers to address client best actor nominees requirements, access control enforcement, post access control, their unique differentiation and provide budget guidelines. We ask them to address all of this in just two paragraphs. Some went a little over, and we afforded them that leeway. I provide a cross-vendor assessment at the end. So without further ado, here are network best actor nominees access control solutions from Cisco Systems, ProCurve Networking by HP, Foundry Networks, Extreme Networks, Nortel, and Juniper.
In Cisco´s view, an effective NAC solution must be able to do at least four things: Authenticate and authorize any incoming user, Assess the posture of any incoming endpoint device, Quarantine that device if it fails to meet policy requirements, Remediate the device to bring it into compliance.
In terms of authentication, Cisco´s NAC Appliance natively integrates with Kerberos, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol best actor nominees (LDAP), RADIUS, Active Directory, S/Ident, and others. It supports single best actor nominees sign-on for VPN clients, wireless clients, and Windows Active Directory domains. Administrators best actor nominees can maintain best actor nominees multiple user profiles with different permission levels through the use of roles-based access control.
Posture assessment is performed either through network-based scans or through the use of an Agent, which works on Windows and Macintosh machines. Policies are either created through pre-configured rulesets best actor nominees for hundreds of third-party applications, such as antivirus and anti-spyware, or are customized for specific applications, such as in-house programs.
Cisco´s NAC Appliance performs quarantine (or access control enforcement) through a variety of network-based means, based on customer preferences. These methods include static or dynamic VLAN assignment, via 802.1x, DHCP, switch ports, ACLs, drop/filter packets, Layer 3 subnet isolation, and Layer 2 broadcast domain isolation. best actor nominees
Finally, Cisco´s NAC Appliance offers a variety of methods for remediation. Users can be guided through an Agent-based wizard, a set of web-based instructions, or automated launching of a Windows Update or SUS (Software Update Server) server. Post access control enforcement is accomplished through the Cisco Security Agent software, which mitigates new and evolving threats without requiring reconfigurations or emergency patch updates.
Cisco´s NAC Appliance differentiates based on three elements: 1) the ability of one product to perform all the functions of NAC regardless of the type of endpoint device (laptops, best actor nominees IP phones, game consoles, printers, etc.) or the method of network access (wireless, VPN, LAN, WAN);

What she is really telling her children is that girls who do not conform to her particular ideas of

Slut-shaming, Suicide, and Mrs. Hall | The Belle Jar
Most of you have probably already seen Kim Hall’s post FYI (if you’re a teenage girl) . Both the original and the many, many brilliant take-downs written in response have been circulating social media this week, so it’s been pretty hard to avoid. If by some chance you’ve grammy awards online managed to miss out on all the fun, I highly encourage you to take a moment to go read Mrs. Hall’s open letter to all girls everywhere. It sure is something.
A lot of really smart folks have written some incredible posts touching on Mrs. Hall’s contribution to societal problems like slut-shaming, rape culture and body image issues. I don’t have anything new or brilliant to say on those topics, but I do want to talk about an aspect of Mrs. Hall’s message that hasn’t really been touched on yet: the very real link between the ideas that she’s putting forward and the recent rise in cyber-bullying, online slut-shaming and teenage suicide.
When I read Mrs. Hall’s letter, the first people that I thought of were Amanda Todd , Retaeh Parsons , Audrie Pott , Cherice Morales . In each of these cases, photographs of the girls that showed them either in various states of undress, or else showed them being sexually assaulted, or in some instances both at the same time, were circulated on social media. In each of these cases, the girls became social grammy awards online pariahs. In each of these cases, the girls committed suicide after enduring bullying and slut-shaming both online and offline.
I am not saying that Mrs. Hall is consciously suggesting that her children should shame or bully their classmates, especially those who have been sexually assaulted. If you asked her, I’m grammy awards online sure that she would tell you that those ideas are so far from what she intended to communicate as to be almost laughable. But still. Slut-shaming, ostracizing and bullying are the end-game of everything she is teaching her children.
“ And now big bummer we have to block your posts. Because, the reason we have these (sometimes awkward) family conversations around the table is that we care about our sons, just as we know your parents care about you .”
“ And so, in our house, there are no second chances with pics like that, ladies. We have a zero tolerance policy. I know, so lame. But, if you want to stay friendly with our sons online, you ll have to keep your clothes on, and your posts decent. If you post a sexy selfie (we all know the kind), or an inappropriate YouTube video even once it s curtains. “
What she is really telling her children is that girls who do not conform to her particular ideas of “modesty” are bad. She is telling them that the girls who post sexy selfies are worth less than the girls who cover up. She is telling them that the girls who pose with an “extra-arched back” and a “sultry pout” are not good enough to associate with her children. Worst of all, Mrs. Hall is telling her sons and daughter that it is fine – in fact, actively grammy awards online encouraged in their household – to shun and ostracize these girls.
If you think that this is too much of a reach, think about it this way: when Mrs. Hall and her family sit around their dining room table and critique the selfies posted grammy awards online online by her sons’ female friends and Mrs. Hall announces that yet another girl needs to be blocked because she’s showing too much skin, what her children learn is that the way that those girls are behaving grammy awards online is shameful and they deserve grammy awards online to be shamed in a way that makes them face real-life grammy awards online consequences. And when a Hall boy goes to school and tells his friend that he’s not allowed to hang out with so-and-so because her pictures are too slutty, and that friend tells a friend, and that friend tells a friend – well, it’s not hard to imagine what those real-life consequences will be.
When Mrs. Hall advises her son’s female friends grammy awards online to, ”take down the closed-door bedroom selfies that makes it too easy for friends to see you in only one dimension,” I can’t help but wonder how many dimensions her sons and her sons’ grammy awards online friends saw those girls in before they heard those comments. Probably they saw them in the same way that they saw all their other female friends: as girls who were funny, girls who were smart, girls who were good at sports or art or music. Probably the Hall boys saw them as brilliant, well-rounded individuals, each contributing grammy awards online in their own interesting way to their lives. Probably they saw them as people .
Well, now they likely only see them in, as Mrs. Hall says, one dimension. That dimension being, of course, their physical bodies. Mrs. Hall has successfully grammy awards online reduced these girls to little more than pretty, shiny, skin-baring objects. And it’s pretty fucking easy to treat an object badly. It’s pretty ea

The idea of payment via mobile phone isn't exactly new, but making it a widespread reality is something else. Auckland-based Pushpay has entered the fray, hoping to be the Rebel X-Wing against the jostling Death Stars of some of the biggest businesses on Earth. And it's just raised more than $1 million golden globes ballot in funding from local investors.
As golden globes ballot any envious glance at profits from the banking sector will tell you, the best way to make money is to deal in money. For that reason alone Pushpay may be in good company. Created by Chris Heaslip and Eliot Crowther in February 2011, Pushpay is based around a service that allows users to make direct payments to registered companies and organisations on their smartphones, using just a four-digit code.
Many of us will have thought about this at least once, especially at times when we find we have forgotten our wallet, but not our phone. According golden globes ballot to a study by IPSOS research commissioned by Google, 44 percent golden globes ballot of New Zealanders over the age of 16 use a smartphone, and about three quarters of them say they don t leave home without golden globes ballot the device. Meanwhile, according to Statistics New Zealand Kiwis currently spend just over $5 billion a month using electronic cards.
This golden globes ballot means big bickies for whoever leads the drive to replace the cards as the payment golden globes ballot mode of choice, even before you start considering the gargantuan offshore potential. In 2008 UK-based wireless telecom research company Juniper forecasted that the combined market for all types of mobile payments will reach more than US$600 billion globally by next year.
As you might imagine, golden globes ballot this means there are one or two big players with their elbows out trying to lap this mega-market up. Google has its Wallet . This stores your credit card details online and allows the currently fairly limited number of phones with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to swipe instant payments at the even more limited NFC-enabled point-of-sale tills.
Meanwhile, golden globes ballot interestingly, Apple decided not to incorporate NFC into the iPhone 5 because it feels its own Apple Passbook system fulfils any need in this area at the moment. Passbook stores and updates membership cards, tickets, golden globes ballot coupons, golden globes ballot and boarding passes, but doesn t do payments. And they are remarkably reluctant golden globes ballot to talk about it there are no swish videos of people in pullovers whispering about how much effort went into it on the Apple website.
Add in to that almost every bank is developing its own app for this or that, and the telcos doing their own thing and you start to get a picture of slow and patchy implementation that has opened up a window of opportunity for smaller golden globes ballot players like San Francisco s Square. Square golden globes ballot allows instant golden globes ballot payments by phone to registered businesses by tapping one button and then simply golden globes ballot saying your name at the counter. You can even set it up to pay hands-free at your favourite locations, so that you don t need to take your phone out of your pocket.
Square also offers a small plug-in golden globes ballot unit for your phone that allows the user to accept credit card payments. Square is expanding rapidly in the US, especially after signing up Starbucks in August as both a customer and an investor to the tune of US$25 million.
But Pushpay is busy squeezing itself into a couple of niches that remain largely golden globes ballot unfilled: areas of the world where Square has not been widely adopted, and potential payment scenarios all the competitors golden globes ballot can t currently cope with.
For example, say you want to pay someone. You re nowhere near a cash register, let alone one that is enabled for Google Wallet, NFC or Square, and/or you don t have a credit card handy and there s nowhere golden globes ballot to swipe the sucker anyway? An example would be a benefit gig for your favourite charity where the lead dude calls for everyone to give five dollars right now, or a small local business or tradesperson who doesn t want all the hassle and expense golden globes ballot of setting up an EFTPOS system.
The big draw for Pushpay golden globes ballot is that it doesn t need any more technology than a smartphone for the customer, and all the vendor needs is a bank account at any one of nearly all the major banks in New Zealand. As a merchant, you would also preferably have someone with the limited savvy required to log on to the Pushpay website to monitor and download the sales results, which allows golden globes ballot you to integrate them into the rest of your figures.
This is Software as a Service (SaaS), with Pushpay doing all the backroom stuff with the bankers to set things golden globes ballot up, which also gets Pushpay customers talking to their banks about their business. And the firm makes its dollars from a flat 50c fee per transaction.
This approach golden globes ballot has the advantage that both customer and merchant are working through their own bank on an app that has been approved golden globes ballot by the

About this Blog: Bill Snyder analyzes the consumer technologies--gadgets, software, electronics, and everything else--that emmy dresses 2011 matter to everyday techies and businesspeople, and explains why these technologies and products should be on your radar -- or not.
Mobile Devices to Drastically Boost Online Gambling and That's a Bad Thing Mobile phones and tablets are making it much easier to gamble online. CIO.com blogger Bill Snyder explains why this is a worrisome trend.
I’ve been known to drop a few bucks at the track or at a friendly poker game. I’ll even buy a lottery ticket now and then. So I’m no bluenose when it comes to gambling. But the increasing popularity of online gambling bother me a lot. It’s simply too easy to drop money when all you have to do is jump on the Web or open an app.
And it’s getting easier. On Tuesday New Jersey legalized online gambling, the third state to do so. On the same day, a committee of the Pennsylvania State Senate voted unanimously to study the idea , and Congress will be holding hearings on the controversial issue in 2014.
A new report from the analysts at Juniper, a research emmy dresses 2011 house, got me thinking about the issue. The report predicts the popularity of Internet emmy dresses 2011 gambling will grow exponentially in the next five years and that one of the biggest drivers will be the proliferation of mobile devices. Juniper believes that there were approximately 63 million unique users of mobile gambling services worldwide in 2013. By 2018 that number will grow by about 100 million, and most of the increase will be in North America, according to the report.
We’ve had some discussions about the report here at CIO, and there’s some feeling that it's irrelevant if you gamble via a PC or a mobile device. Online gambling is online gambling, emmy dresses 2011 and if you’re online it doesn’t matter how you got there. I disagree and so do the authors of the study. “All advantages and drivers that favor the growth of fixed Internet gambling also apply to mobile gambling,” they wrote. “Moreover, the mobile platform emmy dresses 2011 has certain inherent advantages, such as convenience and larger potential market as compared to the fixed Internet.”
Gambling, like suicide, is often an impulsive act. If you get the urge to wager and have to go back home to the office to get online, there’s a good chance you won’t bother. But if all you have to do is open an app on your tablet or smartphone, there’s a much greater chance that you’ll follow through on the impulse.
“As mobiles are largely with their users 24/7, it means that, connectivity permitting, those users are theoretically always able to buy a lottery ticket, place a bet or play a remote game of poker, or partake of in-game/in-play betting,” says the report. As I said, it will be very easy to act on that impulse, particularly when the casinos and gambling sites move away from clunky Web interfaces to apps.
New Jersey emmy dresses 2011 Governor Chris Christie says online gambling will bring in $1 billion in tax revenue by July. Sure, his state could use the revenue, but is it really a good idea to make it so easy for people, particularly those who can’t emmy dresses 2011 afford it, to lose large sums of money in a very short period of time?
Mobile technology isn’t the issue here. It’s just one more way in which smartphones and tablets are changing our lives and how we interact with the world. Many, maybe most, of those changes are for the better. This one isn’t. Let’s hope that other states do the right thing and keep online gambling emmy dresses 2011 from spreading.

The number of discount coupons redeemed through mobile and tablet devices is expected to reach 10 billion this year, up by more than 50 percent from last year, according to a new study by Juniper Research.
Arguably, that retailers are finally coming on board, said Windsor Holden, cassandra s dream research director at Juniper Research. There s recognition amongst retailers that mobile isn t just something that they ought to do, it s something that they have to do if they wish to remain competitive.
Mobile couponing According to Juniper, retailers are looking at new ways to incorporate mobile into their strategies and use it as a delivery channel to drive in-store traffic, consumer engagement and, ultimately, retention.
Juniper found that while mobile cassandra s dream still accounted for a comparatively low volume of coupons issued, retailers had been encouraged by the markedly higher average redemption rate of mobile coupons 10 percent when compared to traditional print media and PC coupons typically 1 percent or less.
There s been a gradual shift in mobile cassandra s dream couponing redemption patterns: with the advent cassandra s dream of mobile wallets, consumers are now storing some of their mobile coupons, rather than redeeming the coupon immediately after issue, Mr. Holden said.
If we just look at this from a consumer perspective firstly, we re still in the midst of an economic downturn and some developed markets, in a recession, Mr. Holden said. Coupons cassandra s dream and vouchers in general experience an uptick in usage in such conditions. Secondly, it could be argued that historically, there was somewhat of a stigma attached to couponing usage. cassandra s dream
Mobile coupons are easier and faster to use for people than cutting out paper coupons cassandra s dream and storing them in a wallet, he said. They are also handy for impulse purchases; users may have a selection of coupons on their phone that they could choose to use, or may search and download cassandra s dream relevant coupons when in-store the attraction of a 10 percent discount might just tip the balance for that impulse purchase.
At the same time, post the app store revolution, cassandra s dream consumers are embracing the wider concept of mobile commerce: they expect to be able to receive coupons via their handsets. This ties into my final point couponing is social, it s becoming integrated into an array of social sites, like Facebook, Foursquare: mobile couponing can be personalized and targeted at the individual, and it s far more appealing to receive targeted coupons than encounter a scattergun approach.

Life Among the Piutes: Their Wrongs and Claims.
M Y editing has consisted in copying the original manuscript in correct orthography and punctuation, with occasional emendations by the author, of a book which is an heroic act on the part of the writer. Mrs. Hopkins came to the East from the Pacific coast with the courageous purpose of telling in detail to the mass of our people, "extenuating nothing and setting down naught in malice," the story of her people's trials. Finding that in extemporaneous speech she could only speak at one time of a few points, city of glass cassandra clare she determined to write out the most important part of what she wished to say. In fighting with her literary deficiencies she loses some of the fervid eloquence which her extraordinary colloquial command of the English language enables her to utter, but I am confident that no one would desire that her own original city of glass cassandra clare words should be altered. It is the first outbreak of the American Indian in human literature, and has a single aim – to tell the truth as it lies in the heart and mind of a true patriot, and one whose knowledge of the two races gives her an opportunity of comparing them justly. city of glass cassandra clare At this moment, when the United States seem waking up to their duty to the original possessors of our immense territory, it is of the first importance to hear what only an Indian and an Indian woman can tell. I WAS born somewhere near 1844, but am not sure of the precise time. I was a very small child when the first white people came into our country. They came like a lion, yes, like a roaring lion, and have continued so ever since, and I have never forgotten their first coming. My people were scattered at that time over nearly all the territory now known as Nevada. My grandfather city of glass cassandra clare was chief of the entire Piute nation, and was camped near Humboldt Lake, with a small portion of his tribe, when a party travelling eastward from California was seen coming. When the news was brought to my grandfather, he asked what they looked like? When told that they had hair on their faces, city of glass cassandra clare and were white, he jumped up and clasped his hands together, and cried aloud, – city of glass cassandra clare
He immediately gathered some of his leading men, and went to the place where the party had gone into camp. Arriving near them, he was commanded to halt in a manner that was readily understood without an interpreter. Grandpa at once made signs of friendship by throwing down his robe and throwing up his arms to show them he had no weapons; but in vain, – they kept him at a distance. He knew not what to do. He had expected so much pleasure in welcoming his white brothers to the best in the land, that after looking at them sorrowfully for a little while, he came away quite unhappy. But he would not give them up so easily. He took some of his most trustworthy men and followed them day after day, camping near them at night, and travelling in sight of them by day, hoping in this way to gain their confidence. But he was disappointed, poor dear old soul!
I can imagine his feelings, for I have drank deeply from the same cup. When I think of my past life, and the bitter city of glass cassandra clare trials I have endured, I can scarcely believe I live, and yet I do; and, with the help of Him who notes the sparrow's fall, I mean to fight for my down-trodden race while life lasts.
"In the beginning of the world there were only four, two girls and two boys. Our forefather and mother were only two, and we are their children. You all know that a great while ago there was a happy family in this world. One girl and one boy were dark and the others were white. For a time they got along together without quarrelling, but soon they disagreed, and there was trouble. They were cross to one another and fought, and our parents were very much grieved. They prayed that their children might learn better, but it did not do any good; and afterwards the whole household was made so unhappy that the father and mother saw that they must separate city of glass cassandra clare their children; and then our father took the dark boy and girl, and the white boy and girl, and asked them, Why are you so cruel to each other? 'They hung down their heads, and would not speak. They were ashamed. He said to them, 'Have I not been kind to you all, and given you everything your hearts wished for? You do not have to hunt and kill your own game to live upon. You see, my dear children, I have power to call whatsoever kind of game we want to eat; and I also have the power to separate

I m still tryng to connect dots. He talks about mothers golden globe winners 2011 in all the episodes. Different stories with different mothers. Apparently there is no connection between the stories and all of them have a different narrative approach and a different resolution. The first stoty was funny somehow and showed as a middle age mother. The second one was about a young potential mother and the last episodes talks about dead mother. Somehow golden globe winners 2011 the filmaker is alway talking about a kind of absence. A mother wich lacks of maternity, a young girl which still doesn t know anything about her future and the memory of a mother in the last documentary part. I found this aspect golden globe winners 2011 very interesting.
So the relationship of the Manchevski golden globe winners 2011 with the maternity is intense but at the same time he seems to reveal a deep loneliness. When we born we lose the phisical connection with our mother and maybe we ll never be able to restore that kind of connection. part of her is lost during the birth.
It s interesting for me that the filmaker focused on an immaterial connection between son and mother. The ideal role of mum, the need to be a mum and the memory of mum. All these fellings are strong and the way he rappresents this intensity is light. he describe the relationship with his mother through three different stories. both of them are in different contest and time and also in different moment of life.
I also enjoyed the technique he used to create this portrait of different mothers. He creates a collage pushing golden globe winners 2011 the viewer to create a deeper connection in these dramas despite of the different times and stories. In this case the viewer need to reflect more about the possibility to find a connection. He suggests different stories and we have to find our own story among them. -cia

[An indieWIRE review from Reverse Shot .] Beginning with his 1994 debut Before the Rain -- a film that, with its interconnecting intercontinental narratives, can be thanked for providing mtv music awards 2011 vote blueprints for all of those Syriana s and Babel s -- Macedonian director Milcho Manchevski has tenuously juggled historical inquiries of his Balkan homeland with a strained, lugubrious lyricism. Ever since his breakthrough his questionable auteur calling cards -- gratuitous nudity, restless editing, endless establishing shots of local color -- have become ends in of themselves and now far outweigh investigations of national identity and political violence, issues that seemed suspiciously like pretenses in the first place. Now with Shadows, the follow-up mtv music awards 2011 vote to 2001 s ridiculous cowboys-against-the-Turks fairy tale Dust, Manchevski has entered the world of the middlebrow horror mtv music awards 2011 vote movie: no guts and blood or high-concept genre revisions here, just a plodding, obvious ghost story with a featherweight moral lesson attached to lend it a whiff of importance and establish thematic links to the rest of his work. It s a feeble exercise mtv music awards 2011 vote that only further cements the director s increasing irrelevance -- indeed, readers will likely have already asked, Milcho who?
Shadows opens with a domestic argument between hospital physician Lazar (Borce Nacev, resembling mtv music awards 2011 vote Adrien Brody) and cuckolding wife Ignjat (Dime Ilijev) that leads to Lazar leaving in a huff and crashing his car on the highway. His survival is miraculous, but soon after recovering with the help of his family (including a young son) at his parents lakeside villa and returning to Skopje to go back to his job he s shaken by several mysterious occurrences. A raggedy crone (Ratka Radmanovic) repeatedly appears at his apartment speaking mtv music awards 2011 vote a dead language, trailed by a wolf; a cantankerous mtv music awards 2011 vote man (Salaetin Bilal) mtv music awards 2011 vote with an eerie child and bloody foot continually waits by the elevator to impart cryptic insults; and a short-cropped, voluptuous temptress named Menka (musician Vesna Stanojevska) shows up with on-again, off-again mtv music awards 2011 vote neck bruises to seduce him into an affair. Neither the overdone choral soundtrack music nor the references to Night of the Dead nor the memory of countless I see dead people narratives are necessary to immediately get what s happening -- these strange people are ghosts mtv music awards 2011 vote -- but it takes Lazar almost two hours to understand what we do in less than a few minutes.
Of course, the point is why Lazar is seeing ghosts, but the answers turn out to be just as lame as Manchevski s weak stabs at mystery. One strand involves the disturbance of the spirits remains by Lazar s mother (Sabina Ajrule-Tozija), a famous physician who has desecrated the graves of poor Aegeans for purposes of medical research. This too is telegraphed as early as possible -- the elder Dr. Perkova clearly advertises her disrespectful materialism when she fails to listen to the mentally deteriorating Lazar and instead shoves money in his hand to secure his happiness. Obeying the spectral command to Return what s not yours, Lazar eventually restores order to the universe by bringing peace to the dead, a facile solution to the history of exodus and exile Manchevski mtv music awards 2011 vote unnecessarily evokes.
The other has to do with Lazar (like Lazarus, you see) getting his midlife crisis groove back. While at first Lazarus is besieged, Repulsion -style, by bugs in his mailbox, the sound of crying children

While Milcho Manchevski s greatest claim to international vma streaming fame might be as the director of the first Macedonian film nominated for the best foreign language vma streaming Academy Award, he probably deserves far more credit for inspiring a host of films that in various ways fracture linear narrative. Told in a triptych which forms a circular narrative, Manchevski s Before the Rain (trailer here ) , made its European festival debut weeks ahead of Pulp Fiction , yet it would be Tarantino s film that would be credited (or blamed) for a parade of non-linear imitators. In advance of the January 30th New York opening of Manchevski s latest film, Shadows , the director s first two films closed the Macedonian Film Festival Sunday night. Rain begins and ends in Macedonian, but its middle story is set in London. The film was in fact a British-Macedonian co-production, at a time when the British government did not recognize that of Macedonia. As befits its title, a storm is always approaching in Rains, both the meteorological and human varieties. In Words, vma streaming the first chapter, Kiril, a young monk who has taken a vow of silence, gives shelter to Zamira, a young Albanian girl running from a lynch mob. After his act of sanctuary results in his own expulsion from the monastery, Kiril mentions an uncle in London might be able to help them, and that is indeed where Manchevski shifts the action with Faces. The Pulitzer Prize winning photo-journalist Aleksandar Kirkov is returning to the city after an assignment in Bosnia that profoundly disturbed him. After resigning, he tells his photo-editor and illicit lover he is returning to Macedonian, with or without her. She declines to leave despite her dubious feelings for her husband. However, the violence she had only experienced vicariously through vma streaming Kirkov s lens erupts into her own world when a Serbian rivalry turns violent in a posh London vma streaming restaurant. The longest segment, Pictures, tells the story of Kirkov s problematic homecoming. As he approaches his native village, he disarms a petulant teenager standing guard with a machine gun. At times Kirkov resembles Eastwood s Man with No Name, except instead of a former gunslinger, Kirkov is a retired photographer. However, we eventually learn that his camera has actually killed people. Although more familiar to American audiences for sinister roles on Fox s 24 and in films like Eyes Wide Shut and The Saint , Rade Šerbedžija gives one of the best screen performances of the 1990 s as Kirkov, the celebrated observer forced to chose sides and participate. Clearly, the spaghetti westerns were a pronounced influence on Manchevski, because he would incorporate the genre into his second film, Dust . Told in flashback by Angela, an elderly woman, to her would-be robber Edge, Manchevski weaves a Munchausen-esque fable about Cain and Abel brothers who start in the Old West, but travel vma streaming to the wild East of Macedonia, as it revolts against the Ottoman Empire. Again, Manchevski plays narrative games, but the intrusion of elements from disparate time periods is often distractingly played for comedic effect. The strongest scenes of the film are actually the least mythical. Rosemary Murphy and Adrian Lester convincingly sell the unlikely relationship between Edge and Angela. vma streaming Unfortunately, neither brother is particularly interesting. Joseph Fiennes s Elijah is a caricature of religious zealotry, while David Wenham is somewhat more nuanced as Luke, who is incapable of true emotional engagement, except when killing people. Dust is a big, ambitious film that ultimately got away from Manchevski. Rains however, is a contemporary masterpiece that reveals vma streaming increasingly greater depths with each viewing. In Rains , characters fantastically reappear in various times and places to further challenge the overall narrative thr ead. Yet, Manchevski s execution is subtle, never directly interfering with the events on-screen. Ultimately, the cycle of violence continues, as the story doubles back, forming a complete circuit. Evidently, Sergio Leone was not his only influence. During last night s Q&A, Manchevski explained the first part of the film s repeated mantra: Time never dies, the circle is not round was in fact inspired by Chick Corea s Mad Hatter album. Given his international success, the Manchevski double-feature made a fitting closing night for the Macedonian Film Festival. Rains is a member of several exclusive cinematic clubs: the Venice Film Festival s Golden Lion, the New York Times Best 1,000 Films Ever Made, and a Criterion Collection DVD treatment. Though flawed, Dust is still fascinating filmmaking, worth seeing simply to compare vma streaming with future Manchevski films, vma streaming like the forthcoming Shadows .

Many cultures maintain that we must heed the voices of our ancestors and honor the dead. In modern Western societies where time is money, these concerns are out of sight and out of mind. Not so in this unusual film by Milcho Manchevski whose first work Before the Rain (1994) won over 30 awards. mtv movie awards 2011 winners Shadows is Macedonia's Oscar entry for Best Foreign mtv movie awards 2011 winners Language Film in 2008. It is a complex and multidimensional drama about one man's quest for meaning and healing when he receives a message that unsettles his soul. Here is a story drenched with death, fear, and the wanderings of the dead.
Lazar Perkov (Borce Nacev) is called "Lucky" and his life has proved the veracity of his nickname. He is a physician who, in the opening scene of the film, survives a car crash that involves a close encounter with death in the form of a journey down a long tunnel with light at the end. After a year of recovering at his mother's beautiful villa, he leaves his wife (Filareta mtv movie awards 2011 winners Atansova) and son to return to Macedonia's capital city of Skopje and his work at a hospital.
Lazar is often disoriented and unable to function as well as he did in the past. One day in his apartment, he encounters an old woman (Ratka Radmanovic) who speaks an ancient dialect. She delivers to him a message mtv movie awards 2011 winners that he cannot decipher. At the university, Lazar meets Menka (Vesna Stanojevska) who claims to be a linguist. She gives him a translation of the message: "Return what's not yours. Have respect."
He begins a passionate affair with her despite the mystery surrounding the wounds on her neck. She is a very erotic woman and surprises him with her ease with physical pleasure. Lazar also encounters a man (Salaetin Bilal) in the apartment building with bloody feet and a crying infant in his care. These three restless souls are from the land of the dead; Lazar (whose name means Lazarus) can see them thanks mtv movie awards 2011 winners to his close encounter with death. In the process of deciding what to do about his debt to the past, this physician comes to grips with personal responsibility mtv movie awards 2011 winners and with his lust for life.
In one of the eeriest scenes in Shadows, writer and director Manchevski has Lazar pass by a cemetery where people are celebrating the Night of the Dead. In this region of the world, individuals spend the evening with departed mates, siblings, and friends. They serve food and drinks to the souls of the dead. The ritual enables those who participate in it to acknowledge the fact of death and its importance in their lives. The scene is a perfect match to the mysterious tone of the film, signifying more than meets the eye.

Gallery MC » Pratt Institute Presents: ‘Mothers’ by Milcho Manchevski
A provocative film dealing with relationships – between men and women, truth and fiction, emotional and state power, like his Academy Award nominated ‘Before the Rain’ this new brilliant feature is set in Macedonia, but clearly relevant to us all. As Piers Handling, Director of the Toronto Film Festival said: “Mothers begins with fiction, indeed oscar ballots with the fabrication of a lie, moves on to an attempt at the fabrication of a myth and ends in the shattering imagery of the real, where no fabrication is possible”.

Farewell My Concubine spans from 1925 through 1977 while Mothers is a dramatized depiction of co

Film makers tell stories with a point of view, theirs. In doing so they have almost full latitude brits 2011 as to the type of narrative that they want to use. From Manchevski s episodic choice in Mothers , void of linearity and exploring the notions of truth and fiction with an emphasis on feeling and emotional stages (that of the characters and that of the viewers); to Kaige s true epic that unfolds in a more traditional manner but also seeks to explore the human psyche on the backdrop of world history in the making.
Farewell My Concubine spans from 1925 through 1977 while Mothers is a dramatized depiction of contemporary brits 2011 Macedonia. The first unfolds as time passes and we follow the lives (from childhood to adulthood) of two principal characters, Dieyi and Xiaolou who meet as young boys in a Chinese opera school that makes a Dickensian orphanage look like summer camp. The backdrop of the opera is important for many reasons: The title of the movie comes from a favorite work in Chinese opera repertory, brits 2011 and recount brits 2011 the tale of a concubine who, loyal and true to her king until the end as he faces military defeat, chooses to dance for him one last time before cutting her throat with his sword. That piece is the central engine of the lives of both Dieyi and Xiaolou as it deeply shaped Dieyi s emotional and sexual development during his childhood, before making stars of the two actors who become known for their performance of that story. While the adult Xiaolou enjoys the Epicurean side of the life that his star status allows him to afford, Dieyi, who plays the concubine and was trained from adolescence to think of himself as a woman, seems to be unable to adjust to life outside the stage. The myth he replays every time they perform that opera has absorbed his entire persona, he is in a state of emotional brits 2011 arrested development and seems unable, brits 2011 or unwilling, to accept the dichotomy of life on stage and away from it. That frozen emotional state contrasts vividly with the seemingly constant changes in their environment: from the Sino-Japanese war all the way through Mao s implacable cultural revolution. As Dieyi constantly struggles in his understanding of what being human is, his country is in constant struggle to try to define itself too, creating both a parallel and a contrast brits 2011 between the two, China and Dieyi. In his own way, he is loyal to the end to his first and only love Xiaolou, allowing the myth he interprets on stage to one more time become reality. As in the story of the king and his concubine, in the end each of us must accept responsibility for one s own fate.
By brits 2011 contrast Manchevski chose a radically different type of story telling in Mothers . Using a 3 parts fold, where each story stand on its own and is seemingly unrelated to the two others, if for the fact that they all deal with truth and fiction brits 2011 and how those two elements brits 2011 shape our lives. I felt that the three stories of this film attracted each other to be in the same film (Milcho Manchevski). It is therefore more of a thematic connection that exists between the three parts: shifting allegiances and setups, brits 2011 victims and perpetrators, and the nature of truth.
There’s sort of a betrayal in all three stories. On the other hand, to me what was more important was that all three stories brits 2011 have similar taste. Taste that grows from the first into the second into the third story as it gets stronger, bigger, darker… (Milcho Manchevski). Just as Kaige was exploring emotions in an unstable world, Manchevski seems to also be driven by this major part of being a human being: the ability to feel emotions. The human race often suffers of the Cogito ergo sum complex, just because our distant ancestors were able to master fire and much later invent the wheel, doesn t make us into reasonable, rational beings. Yes we think, but our thoughts are more often than not clouded by our emotional states. Those same emotional states are the reason the two little girls make up the story of the flasher. Emotional attachment to the idea of the Present being a continuation of the Past leads the three documentary makers into areas they would not have visited otherwise. As for the third part, it deals with the emotions of a whole community when confronted with a terrible, self inflicted ( as the perpetrator is a member of the village) tragedy.
Both Kaige and Manchevski speak with very different voices, but they both share the same common quest. Fully understanding that, despite our misguided belief that we are reasonable creatures, we are primarily brits 2011 emotional brits 2011 beings at our core; they are both interested in trying to understand the scope and power of those feelings.

Mothers is a documentary emmy predictions 2011 which takes place in several locations in Macedonia

Director Milcho Manchevski is welcomed by AIFF | aruba-daily.com
The new country of Macedonia that was one of the countries that was formed out of the break-up of Yugoslavia, had never had a film made in its language before. Native writer/director Milcho Manchevski provided his native countrymen with the very first film in the Macedonian language, Before the Rain . This film has received many awards. It won an Academy-Award nomination and thirty other awards, including Golden Lion for Best Film in Venice, Independent Spirit, FIPRESCI, UNESCO, best film of the year in Argentina, emmy predictions 2011 Italy, Sweden, Turkey, and other awards in Austria, Belgium, emmy predictions 2011 Brazil, emmy predictions 2011 Poland, Puerto Rico, Russia, etc. Also, the New York Times included this wonderful film on its list of the best 1,000 films ever made.
The story is about a Christian Macedonian emmy predictions 2011 man who had lived in London for 16 years, and returns to find his village very changed. The Muslim village that is close by, harbors bigoted individuals, who no longer want anything to do with Christians even though they all attended school together as youngsters. Not all villagers feel that way, but too many of them do, and this becomes problematic, emmy predictions 2011 causing violence and severe hostility. In his own village, members of the main character s own family are just as angry and prejudiced against the Muslims as well, and the story develops along these conflicts. It is an excellent emmy predictions 2011 piece of fiction but tells a story that is true in what is happening in this part of the world.
Mothers is a documentary emmy predictions 2011 which takes place in several locations in Macedonia. It ties in 3 stories, two parts fiction and 1 part documentary, and uses real people, coming together at the end as a documentary. It is an excellent view of life in modern Macedonia, both in the villages amongst the farmers and in the city of Skopje, where the director was born in 1959. Mr. Manchevski directs with a keen eye for contemporary Macedonia. Mothers portrays all types of mothers, neglectful, loving, even absent.
Two other movies which Mr. Manchevski wrote and directed are Dust and Shadows . He teaches directing in New York, and has lived in the United States for quite some time. He studied at university in Chicago.

JTF (just the facts): A total of 16 color works, mounted and unframed, ohio ema and hung against white walls in the main gallery space and the smaller project room in the back. Each work is made up of 5 photographs arranged and printed together as one single unit. All of the works are archival pigment prints, made in 2012 from negatives taken between 1999 and 2010. Each of the prints is sized 10×43 and is available in an edition of 5. (Installation shots at right.)
Comments/Context: When a recognized ohio ema filmmaker exhibits still photographs, I think we all come with the expectation that these images will be “cinematic” in some identifiable way, perhaps in their use of motion, their exploitation of camera angles or their building of narrative arcs. But Macedonian filmmaker Milcho Manchevski’s globe trotting street photographs consistently turn on formal and structural elements, abstracting scenes and compositions from everyday life into two dimensional lines, geometries, ohio ema and blocks of color. His sense for the cinematic comes through in their presentation, where the individual photographs are grouped into sets of 5 and then sequenced into what he calls “strings”, resulting in finished works that combine abstraction with narrative progression, visual echo, repetition, and formal interplay.
One series begins with an image of a dog seen in profile, looking to the right. This is followed by an outstretched arm pointing to the left, and then a triangular shadow pointing back to the right. The next image finds another angular storefront shadow pointing to the left, and the last image caputres ohio ema a stone filled excavation site, once again shaped into a triangular form pointing to the left. The sequence of found shapes moves us back and forth, almost like the turning of heads at a tennis match. A second series begins with an American flag, followed by an orange metal railing flanking patterns of cement being poured and flattened. ohio ema The third image shows a shadowy reflected silhouette with edge of an American flag stuck on the window, next to a nude dappled in shadow. The last image brings back more crowd control railings, this time in silver. The series seems to fold back on itself, ohio ema with multiple ohio ema refrains of visual tunes heard earlier. A third series plays with linear directions: the horizontal stripe on a bus, followed by the vertical stripes of fish, followed by the vertical frames of windows, followed by the diagonals of the sidewalk, followed by the repeated verticals of architecture ohio ema in a reflected window. Once again, Manchevski’s groupings add an additional layer of connection between seemingly unrelated images. ohio ema
Each of these works is almost like a puzzle to be unraveled or a rebus to be decoded, and slower, more deliberate looking uncovers more progressive harmonies and repetitions, especially using shadows and window reflections. Or maybe each is some form of photographic sonata, taking primary and secondary themes through introduction, exposition, development, recapitulation, and coda. Whatever the underlying structure, ohio ema Manchevski’s strings being movement to his formal street ohio ema photographs, adding a sense of playful, symbiotic interconnection to his found abstractions.
Collector’s POV: The works in this show are priced at $1800 each. Manchevski’s work has not yet found its way to the secondary markets, so gallery retail is likely the only option for those collectors interested ohio ema in following up.
